Changes to the AFA 1000 series
In July 2011, TEL released a new version of the AFA 1000 series of fume hood monitors, which included several enhancements and upgrades.
Mounting style options (MK2/MK3)
•TEL still offers all fume hood monitors in two styles, surface mount (MK2) or semi-flush mount (MK3). With the redesign, the back of the monitors have been reconfigured and now each monitor has three relay outputs and three relay inputs (see below). These are volt-free, dry contract relays that can be configured for a variety of functions using the monitor’s software. The relay interface box, which plugs into the on-board output and provides three additional customizable relay outputs (three-pin instead of standard two-pin), remains available as an option.
•MK3: This version is semi-flush mounting and will fit into a standard U.S. power outlet cutout 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide. It is the most common choice for fume hood manufacturers who install the monitors in the factory.
•MK2: This version comes from HSE with a custom mounting box at no additional charge, allowing a surface mounted unit that can be installed without cutting a full-sized hole (4.65 inches tall by 3.35 inches wide). Or, order the MK2 and make the full post cutout for a true flush mount appearance.
HSE is the exclusive North American distributor for products manufactured by TEL, Temperature Electronics Ltd. TEL makes air flow monitors for fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets, VAV fume hood control products (including room pressure controls and fresh air bleed controls) and room pressure monitors. High Air Alarm Relay
•The AFA 1000 alarms now can send a relay output signal when the alarm detects face velocity exceeding the user-determined high air alarm point. This is not a default option and must be enabled and connected in the field.
Temperature
• The monitor now has the capability of monitoring and displaying temperature (alongside the airflow) with the purchase of an optional temperature sensor. The temperature can be displayed in °F or °C and can be turned on or off. There are both low and high temperature alarms with the option of a relay output. The Temperature option is selected as an input function (input relay 3) and has its own parameters in the Configuration menu.
Communications
•The monitor now has Modbus RTU and BACnet protocols on board as standard. The communications connection on the back of the monitor is a 4-way pin strip. To use the communications feature, purchase an INET terminal box (with flying lead that plugs into the pin strip) from HSE.
Analog Output
•The analog output feature is now standard on all AFA 1000 products and will not affect the cost of the unit. The monitor sends an electric signal ranging from 0 to 10 volts, calculated as equivalent to 0 to 200 fpm as measured by the calibrated airflow sensor. Each monitor comes with a two-pin connector attached to the proper port and users may choose to wire the monitor to an external device to use the information the analog output provides.
Sash Warning
•A new option for relay input configuration is Sash Warning Alarm. This often is requested for monitors that work alongside a VAV system. A sash proximity switch is fitted to detect when the sash is closed — when opened it initiates a timer in the software (adjustable), then gives a “Close Sash” alarm.
Passwords
•The default password will be included in all manuals. In addition, TEL has enabled an “engineer’s password.” This password will give access to all menus including the password menu so a user can change any forgotten passwords. This password will work regardless of any passwords entered or changed by the installer. The engineer’s password will not be printed in any manual and can be obtained by contacting HSE or the fume hood manufacturer.
